Lizzie (Sherlock) Millea (circa 1880)

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Sherlock was born about 1856 in Dublin to Bridget (O’Toole) and Francis Sherlock.  Lizzie married James Millea in 1877 in Dublin.  Lizzie and James had three daughters – Mary Agnes “Mae”, Catherine “Sissy” and Florence “Florie”.

Some time after Florie’s birth (about 1884) and Sissy’s marriage (1900), James seems to have left the family.  At that time, Lizzie relocated to Hospital Co. Limerick with the girls.  Lizzie was trained as a nurse/midwife and served the community of Hospital in that capacity.  That included overseeing the births of most of her 24 grandchildren while also caring for her mother in her later years.

Lizzie left Hospital in about 1912 and lived with Mae’s family (the Whelans) in Oughterard Co. Galway until her death in Sept. 1920.  Lizzie is buried in the Kilcummin Cemetery in Oughterard.
